A warm welcome to Members and Visitors alike

Welcome to Walmersley Golf Club

As the Captain for the coming year, please may I extend a very warm and genuine welcome to all our members and their families, our visitors, whether you be a golfer or casual visitor, and the local community at large. You will always be welcome.

2018 promises to be a year of improvement. On the course, the Greens staff of Robin, Brett and Steve have spent the winter tidying up and thinning out the general areas of our moorland course. Improving on our already wonderful views down the Rossendale Valley and, as you reach the top of the course, the spectacular views over Manchester and the areas beyond.

The winter weather has proved challenging, especially to drainage and work has been undertaken to repair and improve those areas which have suffered more than others.
The course remains a good test of golf to players of all abilities and the greens have always been amongst the best in the area. This year we are to host the Harry Vardon BDGA Men’s Championships and I feel sure that we can produce a course to be proud of. I am confident that we can provide a true test of golf for both the serious and casual golfer alike.

Moving into the Clubhouse, our main lounge has been re-named the John Wild Lounge in memory of our previous Secretary and lifelong member of the Club. A small team, headed by our previous Captain Ken Hollins and House Chair Nigel Taylor, have spent the post - Christmas weeks upgrading the lounge with new insulation, lighting and decoration. The dining room has been repainted. I am sure that, whether you’re are here for a wedding, a christening, birthday party or just want to take in the views, you will have a thoroughly good time.

The Club have embarked on a 5 year business plan aided by the EGU and work is well underway on the building of a fabulous new website with the assistance of Nottinghamshire firm Adtrak. We hope to have this up and running by the Spring.

Our Stewardess and Steward team of Sheila and Geoff offer fine food and ales, along with an ever changing and competitive menu. Later in the year our attention will turn to planning a refurbishment of the bar area with a team headed by bar Chair Phil Kay.

May I congratulate our incoming officials of Steve Fox as Vice Captain, John Ankers as President, Alison Gedge as Lady Captain, Helen Parkinson as Lady Vice Captain and Liz Dyson as Lady President and also offer sincere thanks to those officials returning to the ranks.

My chosen charity for 2018 is Prostate Cancer research in memory of my son Mark and John Wild. Whatever we raise will help combat this disease.

There are 8 Open competitions this year, along with our company invitation day on 31st August. Our Social team headed by Frank Priestley have organised a series of functions throughout the year, including themed evenings, a summer BBQ and an ABBA charity night in September.

I hope that, whatever your reason for visiting us at Walmersley, you have a fabulous time.

My very best wishes to you all
Phil Brimelow
